RBT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT · COURSE 10

When a Session Gets Difficult

Safety, Calm Responses, and Professional Decisions
Cuando una sesión se complica
Seguridad, respuestas serenas y decisiones profesionales

A shield, an accessible communication board, and a written plan represent safety, calm communication, and actions within training; no physical procedures are depicted.

About this course

A session can change quickly when a learner shows distress, moves away, throws materials, or demonstrates another behavior that may create a safety concern. This course teaches RBTs to identify relevant changes in the environment, distinguish a refusal from an immediate emergency, follow an individualized plan, and communicate concerns promptly. The course uses general fictional scenarios and does not certify participants in crisis intervention or authorize physical procedures.

Learn through bilingual explanations, illustrations, fictional cases, and multiple-choice activities. These selected-response activities assess knowledge and case judgment; they do not demonstrate observed clinical implementation, authored-document skill, or crisis-response competence.

What you will learn

  • Select observable descriptions of possible support needs without assigning a universal emotional meaning.
  • Distinguish refusal from an immediate safety risk in at least four fictional scenarios.
  • Identify relevant environmental facts to observe and report in a changing session.
  • Given applicable fictional plans, select the first authorized actions for an immediate safety risk.
  • Select a calm, respectful response that preserves access to the learner’s established communication system.
  • Identify why restrictive, physical, or untrained procedures must not be independently added by an RBT.
  • Identify at least five situations requiring supervisory guidance, including unexpected distress and unclear or potentially unsafe plans.
  • Select the report that accurately states the situation, actions actually taken, and information communicated to the supervisor.
