Several studies have shown that many non-verbal autistic children can begin speaking even after the age of four. There are various effective strategies to facilitate language development in non-verbal autistic children or teenagers.
Interactive games are among the actions to promote language. In this regard, games allow for increased interaction with the child and stimulate speech development amid enjoyable activities.
Similarly, singing is another way to initiate verbal communication. Numerous experts agree that singing can be a valuable tool for developing language in autistic children.
Likewise, parents can encourage nonverbal communication to strengthen bonds with their child and later initiate speech. They can use both their body and voice to communicate, using easy-to-imitate gestures like clapping, opening hands, or stretching arms. It is also important to simplify language for children to help them understand what is being said and facilitate speech imitation.
In this regard, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy is a massive help in developing speech in autistic children. Specific ABA programs are specifically aimed at developing language.
However, it is worth noting that every person with autism is different. While one technique may be effective for one child, it may not be for another. Although all individuals with autism can communicate, this is not always achieved through speech.
Another way to promote language may be through assistive devices and visual supports, which the child can use to indicate requests and thoughts in the communicative realm.
Furthermore, creating a conducive environment is essential. A structured and predictable environment can help the child feel safe and willing to communicate. Reducing distractions and providing enough time for the child to respond is also essential.
Observing the child’s signals and interests can help determine which words or phrases to introduce. If the child shows interest in a specific object or activity, focus on that theme when introducing new words.
