RBT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT · COURSE 12

Pairing That Builds Connection

Preferences, Trust, and Respectful Participation
Crear un vínculo mediante el emparejamiento
Preferencias, confianza y participación respetuosa

A book and building blocks remain separate, available choices beside an open communication bubble; the illustration emphasizes choice and personal space, not forced participation.

About this course

A positive relationship can support participation, communication, and a more comfortable learning environment. This course teaches RBTs to observe preferences, interact respectfully, and recognize individualized signals of interest, avoidance, or discomfort. Participants will practice joining activities without forcing interaction and will discuss how to seek supervisory guidance when a learner’s response changes.

Learn through bilingual explanations, illustrations, fictional cases, and multiple-choice activities. These selected-response activities assess knowledge and case judgment; they do not demonstrate observed clinical implementation, authored-document skill, or crisis-response competence.

What you will learn

  • Select examples that illustrate the purpose of pairing in respectful RBT interactions.
  • Identify observable interest, approach, avoidance, and discomfort while considering individual context.
  • Select at least three respectful ways to join an interaction, including following the learner’s lead and offering an available preferred activity.
  • Given a fictional program, select the steps and recording method for the specified supervisor-directed preference assessment.
  • Distinguish genuine available choices from forced or unavailable options.
  • Identify indications of assent or withdrawal and select when to pause, observe, or seek supervision under the individualized plan.
  • Select culturally responsive interactions that respect personal space, communication style, and expressed preferences.
  • Select an objective report of changes in preferences or participation without assigning unsupported motives.
